This will be a great opportunity to know more about Brazilian coffee. Mr Edgard Bressani, president of the Brazilian Coffee and Barista Association will bring great samples for us to taste. Join us and find out more about the amazing gourmet coffee from Brazil. It will also be a great opportunity to know where the coffee is traded and the trading center facility at the ICE. The ICE New York Trading Center opened in April 2007 at 2 World Financial Center in Downtown Manhattan. This 10,000 sq. foot, state-of-the-art facility is designed to serve derivatives traders across commodities and financial markets. This is a unique opportunity for coffee lovers. We will get a full understanding from crop to cup!

After a great cupping at Cafe Grumpy last month, our next cupping is at Intelligentsia on Wednesday November 5th at 6pm. Please read on for important details. What happens during the cupping?
For those of you who like visual descriptions, this is exactly what happens: Once you come into the Intelligentsia labs, you are presented with three cups with three different freshly ground dry coffees. Everybody first smells the dry aroma of each coffee, after which hot water is poured over the cups. We then break the crust of each coffee with a spoon and smell the wet aroma of each coffee (We all get our individual cups). And then it is time to slurp the coffee to get an idea of the flavors, the acidity the body and the finish. Afterwards there is a discussion on varietals, coffee regions, roasting etc. How long does it last?
I would say about 1.5 hours but it may go a little bit over.
Cost of the Event and Payment
This event costs $8 per person and pre-payment is required upon a 'Yes' RSVP. Please understand that I will have to remove all unpaid RSVPs in order to make room for people who really mean it. There is a three day cancellation policy, which means that there will be no refunds for cancellation notices after Sunday November 2nd. Please note that Intelligentsia also holds free tastings every Thursday at 11am. We are paying for our cupping because they are scheduling a special one for us after hours at 6pm. We are essentially paying for the barista's time who will be our guide during this cupping. Interested in a free cupping?
For those of you who are free during the day, I have also scheduled a daytime cupping at Intelligentsia for Thursday November 20th. When you RSVP for this, please make sure to revise it if your plans change. Space is limited and they will be holding your space when you RSVP, which means they will be turning down other people.

On September 19th we're having a cupping at Cafe Grumpy, my favorite coffee shop in the city. An experienced barista will lead us through the cupping process of looking at the beans, smelling the dry aroma, wet aroma, and tasting the coffee. The cupping leader will then tell us about each coffee - if there are any special details about the particular beans, roasting etc. This tasting and Q&A session will last about an hour. We're having this cupping at Cafe Grumpy's Chelsea locations which can accomodate at most 10 of us, but if we get good reviews for the event, we'll have a bigger one at Cafe Grumpy's Greenpoint location. Cafe Grumpy will not be charging us for the coffee that we're tasting but we'll reimburse them for the barista's time, that's why there is a $8 charge for this event. Due to the small number we can accomodate, please finalize your RSVPs by September 12th and pay in advance so that I know exactly how many people are coming. All "Maybe" RSVPs will be erased after September 12th. Also coming up, are two other educational and fun cupping events at Whole Foods Tribeca in October and Intelligentsia in November. Cheers,
