Back after a short hiatus, the New York City Coffee Meetup is back! Join us for a special guest Meetup'er (or is it Meet-er-up-er?), Trish Skeie, Director of Coffee for Zoka Coffee & Tea, Seattle, Washington. She'll be sharing with us about her work as a coffee buyer for one of America's premier coffee roaster-retailers, traveling and cupping coffee everywhere she goes! Our standard format is: 20 minutes of "talk" from our guest 20 minutes of coffee tasting 20 minutes of Q & A and socializing. Like a great cappuccino, the NYC Coffee Meetup is a balanced event... small, but full-flavored, and it's a great coffee experience! This Meetup will take place at Joe The Art of Coffee, at their Waverly Place location. This is a cozy shop (read: small), and so space is limited, so we're asking everyone who RSVP's to be sure to attend. This is actually Trish's FIRST visit to New York City, so let's show her a great time!

HOT OFF THE PRESSES... Our June 21, 2007 Meetup will be at Ninth Street Espresso (address below) at 7:00pm sharp. Thanks so much to SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) retailer member, Ninth Street Espresso and Ken Nye (proprietor) for opening their shop up to us on such short notice. Nick Cho is the President and head barista at murky coffee, Washington DC, is the reigning South East Regional Barista Champion, hosts the Portafilter.net Podcast (by and for coffee professionals and enthusiasts) and sits on the Board of Directors of the SCAA. He will be coming to talk a bit about coffee, about the industry, and about the future plans for these SCAA Coffee Meetups in NYC and around the country. These Meetups, until further notice, will be FREE OF CHARGE! Looking forward to seeing everyone!

This meetup will be a 20-minute presentation by professional roaster Don Schoenholt of Gillies i840 Coffee on the history of coffee in New York City. Don, a co-founder of the SCAA, will then happily take questions on any aspect of coffee. The final 20 minutes are, as usual, an opportunity for meetup members to chat among themselves. Those of you who have met Don before at previous events, such as the annual SCAA Cocktail Party, know he is America's leading authority on coffee. Finally, he will be bringing some of his coffee for door prizes! Pound of Colombian, anyone? Juan Valdez will be serving us coffee, so come prepared to enjoy a cup or two! Our meetups start exactly on time, and end exactly at 8pm. Please do not be late. Note that there will be a photoshoot at the cafe before our meetup, so just hang out until the photographers have finished packing up. The meetup will still be on. Juan Valdez makes coffee for us and sets aside space otherwise given to paying customers: please if you RSVP, realize that Juan Valdez is showing its support in a concrete way. Please come if you RSVP to thank Juan Valdez for all it does for us.

Please come if you RSVP to thank Juan Valdez for all it does for us. Looking at the RSVP list, I see most people are brand new. As a result, I'm going to have this meetup be organizational, to talk about what you want from the group, how often you want to meet, and explain the purpose of this group, which appears often misunderstood. Juan Valdez will be serving us coffee, so come prepared to enjoy a cup or two! Also, we will talk about our SCAA sponsorship! SCAA has agreed to offer us some funding this year, so I can explain what that means to you For more information, see http://www.scaa.org
